How it works
Enter a value
Type a number and pick the source unit. Letters are ignored. Use a comma or a dot as the decimal.
Pick 1024 or 1000
1024 (KiB) matches RAM and many OS file sizes. 1000 (kB) matches disk marketing and network speeds. 1 byte is always 8 bits.
Copy a result
Bit units and byte units are listed separately. Copy sits next to each value. The line under the fields restates the pair, for example 1 Byte = 8 Bit.
What is a bit / byte converter?
A bit is the smallest unit of digital information. A byte is 8 bits. Larger labels multiply by 1000 (SI: kB, MB) or 1024 (IEC: KiB, MiB). This page converts one amount into bits, kilobits, megabits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, and the next sizes up, with a copy button next to each value.
Why use this tool
- Bits, kilobits, megabits, gigabits, and terabits
- Bytes, KB, MB, GB, and TB in the same table
- Switch 1024 (KiB) or 1000 (kB)
- Copy next to each result. Updates as you type
- No account. Unlimited on the free plan
Questions
What does Bit / Byte Converter do?
It restates a data size from one unit to all the others: bits, bytes, kilobits, kilobytes, megabits, megabytes, and up to terabits and terabytes.
How do I use Bit / Byte Converter?
Enter a number, pick the source unit, and optionally switch 1024 or 1000. Every unit updates as you type. Copy sits next to each result.
How many bits are in a byte?
8. One byte is 8 bits, so 1 bit = 0.125 byte. That factor does not change with the 1024 / 1000 toggle.
When should I use 1024 instead of 1000?
Use 1024 (IEC, KiB/MiB) for RAM and many operating-system file sizes. Use 1000 (SI, kB/MB) for hard-drive marketing and for network rates such as Mbit/s.
What is the difference between KB and KiB?
KiB is 1024 bytes. kB (SI) is 1000 bytes. People often write KB for both. This page labels KiB in 1024 mode and kB in 1000 mode so the factor is visible.
What is the difference between a bit and a byte?
A bit is one binary digit. A byte is 8 bits. File sizes are usually in bytes (MB, GB). Network speeds are usually in bits per second (Mbit/s, Mbps).
How do I convert megabits to megabytes?
Pick Mbit as the source unit. The byte column shows megabytes for the same amount of data. With either kilo, 8 megabits = 1 megabyte because a byte is 8 bits.
Is there a daily limit?
No. There is no daily cap on this tool.

No. Open the page and use it.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in the mobile browser.
