What is a hash generator?

What is a hash generator?

Which algorithms can I use?

Is MD5 still safe?
MD5 is fine for casual checksums and legacy systems. Do not use it for passwords or signatures. Collisions are practical. Prefer SHA-256 for new work.
SHA-1 or SHA-256?
SHA-1 is deprecated for security. Use SHA-256 unless you must match an older SHA-1 digest.
Hex or Base64?
Same bytes, different text. Most checksums are hex. Pick Base64 only if the value you were given is Base64.
Does it hash files?
This page hashes UTF-8 text. For a file digest, use File Hash. For a keyed MAC, use HMAC Generator.

When to use Hash Generator
